It has bright green, Celery-like leaves that turn gold, orange, or purple before they drop in late fall and starry, plum-colored flowers in early spring. It spreads by underground stems to form a dense thicket of uniform height. Although it succeeds nicely in full sun and average soil, it is especially valuable for its tolerance of shade and heavy clay. Excellent for naturalizing or for holding the soil on a shady bank. NEW Zenobia pulverulenta ‘Woodlanders Blue’ Deciduous shrub Full sun to part shade One benefit of the native plant movement has been the discovery or rediscovery of fine plants that have been unjustly neglected. Zenobia is a good example. This native of the southeastern United States forms a compact, arching shrub that decorates itself in late May with lots of bell-shaped, licorice-scented white blooms that look very much like giant Lily-of-the-Valley flowers. ‘Woodlanders Blue’ improves on this show through the addition of handsome blue leaves that turn a blazing yellow-red in fall. Zenobia grows happily in full sun or partial shade and slightly acid, evenly moist soil. Try it with Pieris, Leucothoe, and other Ericaceous plants next to a well-traveled path, where its distinctive personality can be admired at close hand. No, Zenobia will never displace well-entrenched foreigners like Forsythia, but it does have a role to play in today’s more diverse landscapes. 3–4ft x 3–4ft. Zone 6.
